Cinema, television, internet and mobile phone: images of reality come face to face

From Thursday September 27th to Saturday September 29th In Paris, MK2 Bibliotheque cinema and National French Library Open to public and professionals

Hervé Chabalier founded the 4 Screens European Festival to promote the idea of images as a source of knowledge and as instruments of understanding our times, whether they be images shown in cinemas, on television, on the internet or on mobile phones. The festival concentrates on reality themed films and society issues.

3 days of screenings

From documentaries, reportages & investigations to reality-based fiction and docu-dramas, the audience will discover 45 European television programmes, all seen for the first time in France and screened at the MK2 Bibliotheque cinema. The cinema feature films The Edge of Heaven (by Fatih Akin, Best Screenplay prize in Cannes 2007) and Under the Bombs (by Philippe Aractingi) will be screened at the French National Library. The best internet and mobile phone films selected for competition will be shown at the MK2 Bibliotheque.

3 days of competition

A European jury, presided over by Jorge Semprun, and including Franziska Augstein, Enki Bilal, Marianne Faithfull, Lilli Gruber, Kadri Kõusaar and Philippe Starck, will watch the 16 European films selected for competition. It will award seven prizes, including the Ecran d’Or for the best TV production overall. The trophies are designed by Philippe Starck.

Pride of place for the internet

CANAL+ and Apple Expo are organising an internet film competition that will choose the best reality-based fiction (maximum 10 minutes) posted on or The on-line voting will determine the ten films preferred by the internet audience and these will be screened during the festival. A jury made up of Bruno Gaccio, Claude Chelli, Matthieu Chéreau and Laurence Gaborieau, will choose the winner of the Internet Ecran d’Or.

Spotlight on the mobile phone

Organised in partnership with SFR, a competition for Young Talents will choose the best reality-based mini-film made for mobile phone viewing. Students and enthusiastic amateurs are invited to upload their films to Internet users can vote on-line for the audience award to the best enthusiast’s film, while a jury of professional journalists from the Capa Agency will decide the Mobile Ecran d’Or for the best student film.

3 days of conferences and meetings at the University of Images

At the French National Library, the University of Images will put on, for the public and professionals, a programme of daily conferences and meetings about the new forms of audiovisual creation.
